This grant supports the promotion and protection of human rights through UNDP's "Implementing the Human Rights Provisions of the Bonn Agreement: A National Human Rights Program for Afghanistan: Programme of the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission." The Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHCR) was established under the Bonn Process and is charged with the national mandate of promoting and protecting human rights in Afghanistan. The AIHRC's programs are focused on six components: human rights education; monitoring and investigation of human rights violations; protecting and promoting women's rights; transitional justice; protecting and promoting children's rights; and research and policy. Additionally, funds will be used for construction of AIHRC's permanent offices; development of communication and security systems for reliable outreach to the provinces; and development and support to civil society in the form of grants to human rights NGOs.
