Partnership for Advancing Community Education in Afghanistan (PACE-A)
A five-year project initiated in April 2006, the Community Based Education program (CBE) will assist the Ministry of Education (MOE) to strengthen and expand community-based education in selected areas where there are no MOE schools. The goal is to increase access to quality education. The project has two components: Component I will expand access to community-based schools, strengthening community structures and improving the quality of CBE. Component II builds the long-term capacity of civil society organizations (CSOs) and develops modes of cooperation between community-based and MOE schools. CBE will provide training to teachers, strengthen the capacity of community education committees (CECs)/parent-teacher associations, and strengthen CSO capacity to implement CBE and seek recognition of the Ministry of Education. In 2007, the project will continue to support over 1,300 classes, mobilize more than 600 CECs, and train CEC members to strengthen their support to CBE classes. Project staff will further train 1,300+ teachers (27% female), strengthen the capacity of over 25 CSOs to implement CBE, and take part in at least eight panels and policy making fora within the MoE system.
