The USAID independent media program  in Afghanistan aims to establish and strengthen a network of independent radio and TV stations to increase access to quality local news and information for the citizens of Afghansitan To date, thirty-six community-based radio stations have been supportedtwenty-six were constructed, while ten were refurbished.  USAID will support up to 20 additional stations over the next two years.

The program also includes training in journalism, programming, support for managment, and financial strength of media outlets open to all independent print and electronic media journalists. Phase One of this project took place from April 2003 - July 2006. Phase Two began in August 2006 and extends through July 2009.
