The Good Performance Initiative (GPI) is a Government of Afghanistan initiative aimed at providing high-impact development assistance to those provinces that have eliminated or significantly reduced poppy cultivation, or demonstrated other effective counter narcotics achievements. The U.S. and the U.K. are the main contributors to the GPI. The Good Performance Initiative is implemented through a grant agreement with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), which administers the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan’s (GIRoA) Counter Narcotics Trust Fund (CNTF).
The objective of the Good Performance Initiative is to support continued progress towards poppy elimination and maintenance of poppy free provinces through the provision of financial support for priority development projects. The Good Performance Initiative will be used to finance projects in provinces that are poppy free or have met criteria that clearly show they have either achieved success in reducing opium poppy production or have established systems to do so.
