OVERVIEW The Afghanistan Municipal Strengthening Program (AMSP) provides capacity building assistance and resources to provincial municipalities. The program aims to improve the ability of mayors and municipalities to provide essential public services such as water and power management, sanitation, safe roads, parks, solid waste management, ditch cleaning, youth activities, and parks and urban greenery.
AMSP works in the following provincial municipalities: Jalalabad (Nangarhar), Khost (Khost), Tirin Kot (Uruzgan), Bazarak (Panjsher), Chaharikar (Parwan), Sharana (Paktika), Ghazni (Ghazni), Gardez (Paktya), Kandahar (Kandahar), Qalat (Zabul), Asadabad (Kunar), and Nili (Daykundi).
ACTIVITIES
- Improve delivery of public services, such as power, water, sanitation, safe roads, parks, solid waste management, and youth activities.
- Improve the capacity of municipal governments in the areas of administration, operations, maintenance, and financial management.
- Increase opportunities for positive youth engagement through sports activities, job skills training, and temporary employment through the municipalities.
RESULTS
- 19,996 cubic meters of trash collected and removed.
- 5,860,050 liters of water delivered to citizens.
- 73,005 man-days (584,040 man-hours) of employment, with $216,353 provided in wages to temporary local laborers.
- 14,692 hours of training/technical assistance delivered to partner municipalities.
- Implementation of a 60-hour adult education training program, with 223 municipal officials trained in urban planning, procurement, and financial management skills.
- 25 youth internships provided (6 women, 19 men).
- 1,348 youth engaged in capacity-building activities such as sports, skills training, and jobs (530 women, 818 men).
