The Food Insecurity Response for Urban Populations (FIRUP) – Kabul program was developed in response to the growing inability of city residents to feed their families due to unemployment, rising food prices, and drought. This one year cash-for-work project offers temporary employment through public and community works projects, enabling participants to earn sufficient wages to purchase food for themselves and their families.  In addition to providing employment and food security to vulnerable populations, the project improves city infrastructure and supports community development priorities.  The project will benefit around 250,000 workers and family members. There are three other FIRUP programs (FIRUP-North, FIRUP-South & East, and FIRUP-West) that focus on other major urban areas in Afghanistan.
