Afghanistan has the 4th highest malaria burden of any country outside of sub-Saharan Africa and the 4th highest in the World Health Organization (WHO) Eastern Mediterranean Region. This project is strengthening malaria laboratory diagnosis capabilities in Badakhshan, Takhar, and Baghlan provinces, three high risk provinces bordering Tajikistan. Under the project, WHO is upgrading the facilities and purchasing laboratory equipment in 41 health centers; training community health workers in health posts on rapid diagnostic testing (RDT); engaging volunteers and school masters in remote villages; and strengthening the supervision, monitoring, and QA system.
