Afghanistan has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world. In order to objectively assess progress made in the health sector towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the Afghan National Development Strategy (ANDS) objectives, the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) and other stakeholders are committed to conducting a survey to measure maternal mortality in Afghanistan. The study will be based on a nationally represented household survey to provide national and regional data. The purpose of the study is to document the magnitude of maternal mortality, the main causes of death, risk factors, and barriers to access in order to inform health service delivery designs and shape future policies. The project is complemented with support from UNICEF, WHO, the World Bank, and the European Commission.
