The International School of Kabul (ISK) opened in September 2005 to support the rebuilding and development of Afghanistan by serving four major groups: 1) repatriated Afghan families; 2) international aid community; 3) diplomatic community; and 4) international business families. ISK offers an American international curriculum while providing a secure environment for Afghan Ministry, Parliament, and professional local and international families. The academic goal of ISK is to challenge and graduate students with a high quality, college-prep education. The program prepares students to transfer or enroll in American colleges or international universities. During the 2006-07 school year around 250 pre-primary through 12th grade students were at ISK. Of the 2007 graduating class of 10 Afghan students, at least six will likely be admitted to U.S. universities with scholarships. Enrollment will increase to 290 students for the 07-08 school year. ISK currently enrolls students from 21 nations; 60% are Afghan. This project is critical to the long-term success of the country, as the leaders who govern the New Afghanistan must have a place where their children can be equipped to be the leaders of tomorrow.
