The rehabilitation of the beautiful National Women’s Dormitory in Kabul was successfully completed in September 2004. Cost of reconstruction was $8.1 million. USAID has committed additional funds for three years to ensure continued management, maintenance and food services. The dorm will enable over 1,000 girls, primarily from outside Kabul to attend one of four institutions of higher learning in Kabul, including the medical school, the Afghan Education University, the Polytechnic Institute and Kabul University. President Karzai and the U.S. Ambassador inaugurated the facility of four expansive wings with three floors, a huge dining and study area with modern kitchen, pristine laundry facilities, a library and sports courts, with full access for the physically challenged. The spacious, bright dorm rooms have separate sleeping/study units for six girls. Students began moving in at the start of the new academic year in March 2005.
