Private and Community Forestry for Natural Resource Management

The Private and Community Forestry project, implemented by Cornell International Institute for Food, Agriculture and Development (CIIFAD) and Global Partnership for Afghanistan (GPFA), is a new project designed to establish private agro-forestry businesses and to promote community-based natural resource and watershed management. New activities will conduct market research, develop farmers’ business skills to enable farmers to understand the range of marketable tree and wood products they can produce, and study the associated profit margin for marketable tree and wood products. The project will work with local community institutions including village shuras and community development councils while targeting rural men and women. In FY07, the project aims to establish 50 profitable woodlot businesses and a network of local farmers capable of training others in tree propagation and cultivation. The first phase of a market survey will be completed and 50 farmers will be trained in basic business skills for the operation of private woodlots.
