The Health Services Support Project (HSSP), in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), provides technical assistance and capacity building support to contracted PPG NGOs to improve the planning, management, implementation, and quality of the Basic Package of Health Services (BPHS) and Essential Package of Health Services (EPHS) in the 13 USAID-funded provinces. Specifically,  HSSP works with the MoPH to improve the quality of services provided to women of reproductive age and children under five;  to increase the number and performance of BPHS and EPHS service providers, especially for women in rural and underserved areas; to improve the capacity and willingness of communities to make informed decisions about their health and support and sustain health seeking behaviors; and to integrate gender awareness and practices into the BPHS and EPHS service delivery.

Through HSSP, USAID is supporting the development of eight community-based midwifery education programs in Bamyan, Badakhshan, Ghor, Jawzjan, Khost, Paktika, Paktya, and Takhar provinces and two hospital-based midwifery training programs in Kabul and Hirat.  It has provided organizational capacity-building assistance and support to the Afghan Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ASOG), the Afghan Midwives Association (AMA) and the National Midwifery Educational Accreditation Board (NMEAB). Additionally, HSSP collaborates with the Afghan Center for Training and Development (ACTD) to conduct gender research and to promote the integration of gender awareness and practice.
