The United States Government is responding to the emergency situation caused by severe floods in the central provinces of Afghanistan, at the request of the Government of Afghanistan.
The Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development has arranged for immediate delivery of 600 blankets and 200 tents, and is coordinating food assistance to the people affected by the flood. The U.S. Government is mobilizing to provide logistics support, technical assistance, and recovery planning support in partnership with the Government of Afghanistan Line Ministries. Additionally, the United States is providing additional blankets, tents, food, and extra fuel to the local counterparts of the Department of Disaster Preparedness in the central provinces.
Today U.S. Ambassador William B. Wood announced that the U.S. Government will contribute donations of required goods and services to meet identified needs. A number of senior USAID staff members are working with local officials in the central provinces to evaluate the situation on the ground. USAID partners are assessing damage to livestock, agriculture, and livelihoods in the region, while senior engineers are evaluating the condition of the roads and bridges. The United States Government is assisting Afghanistan government agencies to ensure that these roads and bridges are accessible for the delivery of relief supplies.
The American people express their sympathy and solidarity with the victims and the families of those afflicted by this terrible tragedy.
