Public Infrastructure Projects to Improve Government Service Delivery in Parwan Province

Chaharikar, Parwan Province, Afghanistan  | Tuesday, June 30, 2009

On June 30, the Chaharikar Municipality and the United States Government (USG) inaugurated four new public infrastructure projects to improve the quality and delivery of local government services to Afghan citizens.  The projects include the construction of a meat market with thirty shops, nine public latrines, a coffee house, and the renovation of the municipality building.

These projects provide essential services and improve the quality of life, health, and sanitation for the citizens of Chaharikar.  Women will be able to use safe, clean latrines when shopping in the city, and the local government staff will be able to conduct official business in well-built offices.

Additionally, the four projects will increase revenue for the Chaharikar Municipality and can lead to much-needed public-private partnerships.  Through the collection of leasing and user fees, the municipality will ensure that revenues are available for maintenance and increased public service delivery, fostering long-term development for the city. 

Chaharikar Mayor Ghulam Sediq Sediq remarked, “I, on behalf of Chaharikar Municipality and the people, thank USAID… [for its] contributions, serious efforts, and assistance in implementing the projects.”

The Charikar Municipality provided municipal land and space for these projects, while the USG provided funding and technical assistance.
