International Relief and Development, Inc. (IRD)

IRD’s mission is to reduce the suffering of the world’s most vulnerable groups and provide tools and resources needed to increase their self-sufficiency. We accomplish our mission by implementing targeted cost-effective relief and development programs that improve the lives of these vulnerable groups. IRD, a charitable, non-profit, non-governmental organization, focuses its operations in regions of the world that present social, political and technical challenges. IRD specializes in facilitating and supporting assistance that is tailored specifically to those most in need.

IRD has been working in Afghanistan since May 2004 to provide tools to rebuild the country’s infrastructure and economy. IRD is currently implementing three USAID-funded programs: AVIPA, to train and provide seeds for drought-affected farmers; the Human Resources and Logistical Support (HRLS) program, to oversee construction projects across Afghanistan; and Strategic Provincial Roads, to build 1,505 km of gravel roads in the particularly challenging eastern and southern provinces. And in Jalalabad, IRD began the now self-sufficient Construction Trades Training Center to help basic labor workers receive training to increase their skills.
