Kandahar

Capital Kandahar
Population 1,058,000
Area 54,022  km²

The arid province of Kandahar is one of Afghanistan’s largest and least populated regions. The capital, Kandahar City, is one of the oldest cities in the world and, as the capital of the emerging 18th century Afghanistan, it is generally considered the birthplace of modern Afghanistan. Kandahar is the home province of President Hamid Karzai and shares a 402-km porous border with the Pakistani province of Baluchistan. The majority Pashtun population speaks mainly Pashtu and Dari. The agriculture-based economy, well known for its diversity of fruits, has in recent years become heavily dependent on poppy crops as a source of revenue. While the central government has established councils in Kandahar, shura (local) law continues to play a significant judicial role in the region.
