Bamyan

Capital Bamyan
Population 398,000
Area 14,175  km²

The mainly Hazara-populated province of Bamyan is situated on the ancient Silk Road and is most famous for the Buddhist monastery and Buddhas of Bamyan statues destroyed by the Taliban in 2001. The province is considered one of the most progressive for women’s rights, and in 2005 elected Afghanistan’s first female governor. Bamyan’s economy is dependent upon animal husbandry and agriculture. Although the mountainous region has poor soil quality, its farmers are able to cultivate wheat, barley, and potatoes. There remains some hope that the tourism industry will be revitalized as the Afghan government has vowed to rebuild the Buddhist statues.
