Village-Based Watershed Reforestation in Ghor Province

Program
Agriculture (Accelerating regional economic growth to provide licit alternatives to poppy production)
Dates
January 2007 - January 2009

USAID’s Village-Based Watershed Restoration project is to be a catalyst for sustainable land management in Ghor Province where (a) communities take the lead in restoring and protecting their natural resources and increasing vegetative cover and (b) where this role is recognized and supported by the local and national government. Given the codependency between livelihoods and natural resources, the project is intended to contribute to both livelihood security and environmental sustainability.

The program aims to provide communities in Ghor province access to sustainable use of natural resource management to enhance their licit economic productivity. The strategic objectives of the two-year project are: 1) Communities demonstrate that they understand the process for implementing watershed restoration; 2) Soil and Water Conservation (SWC) measures are in place in target watersheds; and 3) The Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan supports watershed restoration processes in Ghor Province.
