Supporting the International Observation Mission

Program
Democracy & Governance (Elections and political competition)
Dates
July 2009 - December 2011

The Supporting the International Observation Mission project promotes good governance and strengthens credible and transparent electoral processes in Afghanistan. USAID seeks to enhance public confidence and transparency in the electoral process by supporting international observation of Afghanistan’s election events, the electoral process and performance of the independent election institutions. The involvement of international observers continues to provide a critical integrity feature to ensure transparency and objective critical analysis of the overall election process. USAID, through its partner organizations, deployed around 727 long and short term observers during the course of the 2009/2010 elections in Afghanistan covering a total of 31 provinces. In addition to observing the electoral process, the international election observation mission also provided valuable capacity building assistances to FEFA the only domestic observer mission in the country. The project is an important contributor and will be a facilitator of post-election multi-stakeholder dialogue to present long-term recommendations for electoral reform.
