From the American People
Through its Strengthening Education in Afghanistan (SEA) project, USAID strengthens the programmatic and operational capacity of four organizations working in basic and higher education activities and has a small grants program to fund innovative basic and higher education activities for Afghan governmental and non-governmental organizations. In the area of basic education, USAID supports the Afghan Child Educational and Care Organization (AFCECO), which provides a safe living and educational environment for children affected by war. AFCECO opened up a new learning center, which provides a rounded, balanced learning environment through tutoring and extracurricular activities to vulnerable children. In basic education, USAID supports Aid Afghanistan for Education, an Afghan non-governmental organization providing accelerated learning programs to girls and young women who would otherwise not be able to attend schools. For higher education, USAID strengthens the operations of the Afghanistan Center at Kabul University to enable it to expand and preserve its collection of Afghan historical, academic, and literary materials, including digitizing library holdings and making them available via on-line to qualified researchers. Additionally, USAID works with college students and school administrators to make campuses safe and inclusive for girls, while promoting a culture of tolerance and appreciation for diverse cultures, languages, and peoples in Afghanistan. The quality of residence life programming at the national men’s and women’s dormitories is to be a model for other Afghan universities.
