USAID’s maternal and child health program, Rural Expansion of Afghanistan's Community-based Healthcare (REACH), worked very closely with the Ministry of Public Health to provide essential services to the Afghan people in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH). Twenty-nine non-governmental organizations (NGOs) were awarded $68 million of grants and in-kind contributions to provide health services to the most underserved populations of Afghanistan by implementing two standard packages of services – the Basic Package of Health Services (BPHS) and the Essential Package of Hospital Services (EPHS).

Working with the Afghan Ministry of Health to prevent these unnecessary deaths, USAID provided nearly fifty-four metric tons of pharmaceuticals (119,016 lbs.) for use by nineteen nongovernmental organizations (NGO) in fourteen rural Afghan provinces.
