Recognizing the importance of security, governance, and development in establishing stability in Afghanistan, the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development (MRRD) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) are working with community organizations on small scale infrastructure activities to boost local confidence.
Minister of Rural Rehabilitation and Development (MRRD) H.E. Jarullah Mansoori, United States Ambassador Karl W. Eikenberry, and USAID Mission Director Earl Gast gathered today at the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development (MRRD) to officially launch the Community-Based Stabilization Grants (CBSG) project. The Afghan and U.S. dignitaries signed a memorandum of understanding to formalize their partnership for this new project.
The two-year project promotes stabilization in Afghan communities in 14 provinces in the northern, western, and central regions of the country, working with Community Development Councils and other eligible grassroots organizations to determine priorities on activities. These activities include digging irrigation canals, repairing community buildings such as schools and health clinics, and purchasing supplies for community schools, public meeting halls and health clinics.
“The Government of Afghanistan understands the need to reach into all areas of this vast country and to give local leaders the tools to decide priorities,“ said Minister Mansoori. “We look forward to deepening our partnership, not only with the U.S. Government, but with the people of Afghanistan through the program.”
CBSG project activities will be limited in size. The maximum grant award is $25,000 and activities will be completed within three months.
“The official launch of the CBSG program demonstrates the commitment of the Government of Afghanistan and the U.S. Government to empowering Afghan communities to reject the influence of insurgents and to take the lead in their own development,” said Ambassador Eikenberry.
The CBSG project aims to strengthen rural communities, support sustainable and inclusive local governance, alleviate poverty, and empower rural Afghan communities.
