Construction of the Bibi Sarwary Park recently began under the auspices of the Kabul Municipality. The park, which will be completed in 90 days, is located in the first part of Khair Khana in District 11, adjacent to Bibi Sarwari Sangari High School. When completed, the park will provide a green space to filter air pollution, as well as being a place for students to enjoy.
Although District 11 is one of the few districts in Kabul with a planned layout, residents continually cite a lack of green areas as a problem. Residents of District 11 voiced their concerns and the Kabul Municipality responded to these concerns by converting the previously empty land. Although Bibi Sarwary Park is one of the first parks to be built at the district level, it will not be the last. Residents can continue to work with the Kabul Municipality to convert other empty lands into green spaces.
With support from the U.S. Agency for International Development, the Kabul Municipality will construct a perimeter wall, sidewalks, solar lighting facilities, and guard and maintenance rooms; install a gate, irrigation, and playground equipment; and provide trees, shrubs, and flowers.
The U.S. Agency for International Development’s Kabul City Initiative Project provides technical and material support to the Kabul Municipality so that needed services can be delivered to residents of Kabul.
