Blown-Out Shopping Mall Restored

A damaged Afghan shopping mall in the heart of Kabul City was restored through USAID support

Ferosgha-e-Afghan shopping center in Kabul City was blown-out on January 18, 2010. In the terrorist attack, the five-story building was burned out and the various trading businesses located in the building were severely damaged.

The Ferosgha-e-Afghan shopping center is a five story building located in Kabul City. It was substantially damaged when three Taliban units attacked government buildings in the capital city in January 2010, which officials say killed at least 27 people and injured more than 50.

The shopping mall was repaired and its businesses restored through a USAID grant in Aug. 2010. It has reemerged to be a lively shopping center in Kabul city.

Extensive cleaning and renovation was required on the second floor. The damage to the building and the cleaning and renovation costs were more than $600,000.

USAID funded more than $200,000 for removing unsafe materials and cleaning. The shopping center owner covered all other costs.

The center is now a lively and financially productive place for Afghans to buy locally made and imported products.
