AFTER Connecting the cities of Qarghayi and Mandrawol facilitates business and improves the ability of the people to work together toward common goals.
Today, the cities of Qarghayi and Mendrawol in Laghman Province both have a population of more than 92,000 people.
Almost a century ago, the British built a bridge over the Laghman River to connect the two cities. The bridge was one lane and made of metal. The rust had taken its toll on the narrow bridge and safety was a serious concern. Oncoming traffic and significant congestion on the deteriorating bridge had become a big problem.
To help improve transportation, USAID built a new bridge to replace the old. The two cities are now connected and the entire regional population has benefitted.
As it becomes more important for the Afghan population to begin working together, the road and bridge systems become very significant. USAID has been an intricate part of connecting communities and rebuilding Afghanistan.
