The US Army Corps of Engineers Afghanistan Engineer District (AED) formally stood up March 2004. Prior to being formally recognized as the AED, the Corps had an area office in Kabul, where the Headquarters currently resides. AED has a broad mission and area of responsibility. There are three major program areas: the U.S. Forces Program; the Afghan National Army – ANA – Program; and the U.S. Agency for International Development – USAID – Reconstruction of Afghanistan Program. AED’s geographic area of responsibility currently includes Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, and Tajikistan.
