Expanding Access to Local Television

The Sabawoon network now covers a population of 138,787 residents of Helmand Province. USAID is positively serving local population in various provinces of Afghanistan by enabling local TV stations with new technologies.

The increasing popularity of television is providing a critical source of news and entertainment for citizens across Afghanistan. Through the Afghanistan Media Development & Empowerment Project (AMDEP), USAID has supported the construction and upgrade of provincial TV stations in an effort to provide high-quality media broadcasts and expand TV access to underserved and remote communities in Afghanistan.

With the support of USAID, the first provincial TV station was installed at Sabawoon TV in Lashkar Gah in Helmand province. After installing the Tri-caster studio, a portable live production system that extends the excitement of live broadcast production via projector, television and Internet, the Sabawoon network covers a population of 139,787 residents.

USAID has also provided TV training and equipment upgrades to the Sema-e-Mehr Community TV station in Takhar, Kawar TV in Kunduz, and Ghaznawyan Radio and TV in Ghazni in its efforts to broaden TV audiences across Afghanistan.
